The primary charge shaft is a metal shaft enclosed in a rubber shell. They have a different structure of the rubber layer. The main task of this part is to charge the photodrum with a uniform negative charge. In some cartridges, the shaft performs the function of a kind of wiper - it cleans the photo drum from toner residues and paper dust.

The shaft also erases the residual charge left on the drum from the previous charge. The primary charging shaft has a long service life and fails quite rarely. But damage to this part can worsen print quality. The primary charge shaft is prone to heavy contamination with paper dust, so it requires regular and thorough cleaning.
