Ultrastar DC HC520 are 12 TB hard drives that belong to the fourth generation of hard drives that use HelioSeal technology to fill the hermetic chamber with helium. It was this technology that made it possible to create hard drives of such a large volume.

To achieve such a high capacity, the manufacturer placed eight 3.5-inch plates in its case at once, which no one had done before in this form factor. The novelty uses perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology, which, according to the manufacturer, makes them the best solution for "tasks with active random access".

The spindle in the Ultrastar DC HC520 rotates at a speed of 7200 rpm and the buffer size is 256 MB. Average access times are 8 and 8.6 milliseconds for reading and writing, respectively. The average data transfer speed is 255 MB/s.
