The photo drum is one of the main parts of copiers and laser printers. Structurally, it is a metal cylinder (usually aluminum), covered with a layer of photoconductive material — a dielectric, the electrical resistance of which drops sharply under the influence of light radiation.
At first, selenium compounds were used as photoconductors. Currently, selenium photo drums are almost completely discontinued. Various organic compounds are used instead of selenium. Recently, photo drums with a coating of amorphous silicon have become widely used.
